The British Invasion of The 1980s - Episode 202

MTV Logo. Public Domain.

Not only was there one British invasion, there was a SECOND British invasion to the United States, this time happening in the 1980s. Bands such as Duran Duran, Wham!, Phil Collins, The Human League, A Flock of Seagulls, Spandau Ballet, etc.. all had major hits in the 1980s and it was largely thanks to MTV starting. With American groups not really well versed in the art of music video making, the Brits had a wealth of material for the burgeoning new music television station to plumb. Who remembers Human League's seminal video for 'Don't You Want Me'? A quick search on YouTube will refresh your memories no doubt! You'll more than likely fall down a 1980s British music artists hole on YouTube though!

Who is your favourite 80s British artist?

The British Invasion of The 1960s - Episode 201

United Press International, photographer unknown, Public domain.

It isn't taught much in schools, but in 1964 the USA was invaded by Britain. No, it was not a military incursion, but a cultural and musical one. The Beatles, arguably the most famous band in the world, landed at Idlewild airport (soon to be renamed JFK in honour of the recently deceased President) in New York City on February 7th 1964 to an estimated five thousand screaming fans. Two days later, they made their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan show and 73 million Americans got their first look at what was to come in the years that followed.

Name That Song, 1990s Edition - Episode 130

Recently I fell into a giant YouTube hole of videos of today's teenagers reacting to music from the 1990s.  Luckily, I've since found my way out of said hole, and returned with an idea which has become today's podcast.  No, we're not teenagers, but we are reacting to music from the 1990s, or more specifically, we are each choosing five songs that the other has to try to guess either the name of, or the artist who sang them.  Now, this works because, while many songs from the '90s were hits on both sides of the Atlantic, many songs that made it big in either America or Britain were not popular in the other country.  Come listen and play along, then let us know if you knew all the songs that were played.  And, if you enjoy this podcast, please let us know if you'd like us to do another episode of songs from a different decade and if so, which decade.
